ALANIS - Impact of Artificial Light at Night on Pelagic Ecosystems in European Seas

The international joint project ALANIS investigates the effects of changing light conditions due to human activities (e.g. coastal turbidity or ship lighting) on marine ecosystems. The project will produce a sensitivity atlas for three European marginal seas, including the southern North Sea and the Wadden Sea. KSE will perform all modeling activities.

Collaboration with SINTEF, SAMS, University of Strathclyde, University of Tromsø, University of Bergen, IOPAN, HCMR, University College Cork

Funded by JPI Oceans JAN 2025 - DEC 2026 JPI Oceans

AGRIO - Effect of anthropogenic modifications and climate change on greenhouse gas emissions along the river-ocean continuum

The joint project AGRIO investigates the emission of climate-relevant gases such as methane and nitrous oxide from marine sediment in the coastal area of the North Sea. The main aim of the research is to assess the impact of human interventions such as the deepening of shipping channels in the estuaries.

Collaboration with AWI and UFZ

Funded by Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, JAN 2025 - DEC 2027

ElbeXtreme - Monitoring and modelling of extreme events in the Elbe estuary and the German Bight

Elbextreme_Logo

The national joint project ElbeXtreme investigates the effects of extreme events (e.g. storm surges, heat waves and low tides) on the Elbe estuary and the adjacent German Bight. The study not only covers ecosystems but also socio-economic aspects and hazard safety. With a broad consortium including non-scientific institutions such as the THW, model scenarios are being created and recommendations for action are being developed together with the relevant social stakeholders. Together with other Hereon departments, KSE makes the largest scientific contribution to ElbeXtreme and coordinates key sub-projects.

Cooperation with GEOMAR, IOW, Kieler Forschungswerkstatt, S.PRO, THW, UNU and many more

Funded by BMBF, DAM, Hansestadt Hamburg, Hansestadt Bremen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, JAN 2024 - DEZ 2026 ElbeXtreme
