Data Management
What is research data management?
Data management includes organizing and controlling workflows for efficiently creating and managing data. This process starts in the planning phase and runs through the creation, archiving and reuse of data. It comprises the daily work with research data during a complete research project and deals with topics such as naming conventions of files, sharing of data or backups.
Benefits of Data Management
- It increases the visibility and relevance of your research.
- It saves you time in the long run.
- Proper documentation makes your work reusable.
- It increases the efficiency of your research.
- It preserves your results for the long term and prevents data loss.
Data Management Plan
A data management plan for participants and promoters of a project, clearly states how data will be managed before and during a project. The data management plan is a living document that should be further developed in the course of the project and adapted to the actual circumstances of the project.
Data DOIs
DOI is the acronym of Digital Object Identifier. It is a unique identifier that permanently links to specific content on the internet. By contrast to normal URLs that change rather frequently, DOI-linked content can be found under the DOI for at least 10 years. DOIs allow you to find, cite and reuse the linked content in the long term. In science, DOIs are primarily known from journal publications. However, they are now increasingly being assigned to datasets as well, and thus guarantee the long-term archiving of data. As a scientist, you benefit from data DOIs on your datasets because
- you receive scientific recognition for collecting your data,
- other scientists can reuse and cite your data,
- you can cite your own data in publications,
- you can submit your manuscripts to publishers who have data DOIs as a prerequisite.
Our department supports Hereon scientist in requesting data DOIs. Depending on the data type, you can get data DOIs from the World Data Center PANGAEA or the World Data Center for Climate (WDCC).
