Hydrographic monitoring - Neva Bight

General Information

The overall objective of HYMNE is to provide to the environmental administration of St. Petersburg a low cost tool, which is well enough validated to monitor and to predict key parameters for the description of the environmental situation in the Neva Bight. To incorporate the monitoring of the external impact to the entire Gulf of Finland, the project will optimise the use of products operationally provided by satellite-borne optical and infra red observation techniques. The usefulness of the all weather satellite SAR detection of the river plume and ice fields along the Golf will be studied. The project will adapt a microwave radar as a tool for the ground-based observation of the water exchange through the gates of the storm protection dykes of the Bight. The data to be attained during the phase of experimental monitoring will provide the basis to calibrate and validate this system for the extraction of sea surface currents.
